“RE-SEARCH ALPS” presented by Unimont – UNIMI at WIRE 2018. Gather, consolidate, harmonize and make available data about Laboratories, Research and Innovation Centers all across the Alpine Region in order to support innovation and sharing.

On July 5, in occasion of WIRE 2018, within the session “New Approaches for need-based cross-regional cooperation to cope with Alpine Region Challenges”, Unimont – University of Milan will present the first results generated by the RE-SEARCH ALPS project.

The project, which was funded in July 2017 under the Programme Connecting Europe Facility: Telecom (CEF-TC-2016-2 – Public Open Data), has being developed in collaboration with the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Lead Partner), the French and the Italian Ministries for Research and Education (MIUR, MESRI), and the French enterprise Sidetrade and it is based on scanR platform – implemented by the MESRI in 2016.

By June 2019, RE-SEARCH ALPS aims to gather, consolidate, harmonize and make available to different targets (public and private bodies working at local, regional and national level) data about laboratories and research and innovation centers which are active in particular in the 7 countries (IT, FR, CH, AT, SI, DE, LI) and in the 48 Regions of the Alpine Region (EUSALP).
The platform will allow users to know what the laboratories and research centers do; where they are located; where excellence emerges, according to research fields / themes and numbers (active researchers, published papers, won prizes, running EU projects, gotten patents, etc); who are the people working in a specific center and determining its excellence; which are the network of relations they highlight in their websites. Semantic and multilingual search algorithms support the users in retrieving the data of interest.

The Alpine Region provides a huge potential for successfully developing regional transformative activities into emerging industries and is home of many strong businesses. The emergence of such new industries requires great deal of efforts in terms of innovation and investments in R&D.
The project constitutes a strategic tool for researchers and experts, policy makers, stakeholders at the national and European level, as it can contribute to enhance collaboration and to design Win-to-Win models for innovation based on a complete, deeper, updated and more accessible knowledge from open big data related to research centers and labs.

The Beta version of the search platform, already available with data concerning French and Italian research centers and labs, is an adapted and extended version of the scanR platform (https://scanr.enseignementsup-recherche.gouv.fr/) developed by MESRI on 2016. The resulting dataset (generated by the integration of more than 15 sources) contains data about 70.000 organisations and 60.000 projects.
